About the event
"There is nothing more rewarding to me than to watch a student transported by the process and fall in love with the medium of watercolor."
Discover a fresh, loose approach to transparent watercolor. Learn to work with, not against, the medium to create dynamic paintings that seem to paint themselves. Learn how to observe and to simplify in a plein air setting and avoid overworking.
Perfect for those with some drawing and watercolor experience who have always wanted to try their hand at plein air, as well as for those who are already familiar with working outside.
Daily demonstrations, with plenty of time for individualized instruction.
The spacious Inview Studio provides a lovely indoor space for critiques or demos.... or a place to paint if the weather does not cooperate.
Meet Your Artist

Marilyn Rose, resides in Northern New Jersey and is a signature member of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, the Northeast Watercolor Society, the New Jersey Watercolor Society, and the Garden State Watercolor Society. Her paintings have been juried into and have won numerous awards in state, national and international exhibitions and are in private and corporate collections across the U.S. and Canada. She has been selected to participate in prestigious plein air competitions including Paint Annapolis, Wayne (PA) Plein Air, and PleinAir Easton and her work has been featured in Plein Air Magazine. Marilyn teaches at the various locations, including her home studio (both in-person and virtually) and The Art School at the Old Church in Demarest, NJ. She runs a very popular plein air workshop each summer at the Landgrove Inn in Vermont. Selected for artist residencies in NYC’s Bryant Park and Arad, Israel, she is often called upon to demonstrate for arts organizations.
Marilyn earned her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis as a Fred Conway Fine Arts Fellow and came to NYC to begin her career in graphic design. After establishing herself as an art director in New York, she created her own graphic firm, Marilyn Rose Design, specializing in branding, logos, magazines and corporate brochures for clients throughout the New York Metropolitan area. After launching her three sons, she found time to reenter the world of fine arts and fell in love with watercolor. Her work is informed and inspired by her studies with such well-known watercolorists as Charles Reid, Mel Stabin, Jean Uhl Spicer, Antonio Masi, Paul Ching-Bor, and Tim Saternow.
While her paintings take the natural world around her as their subject matter, they document both an inner and outer journey. They are really about edges; the places where things meet: paint and paper, light and shadow, pigment and water, reality and abstraction. Marilyn’s work takes a traditional medium, and pushes its boundaries, with a boldness and exuberance, that she invites the viewer to share.

Mini-FAQ
Can I check out earlier?
Yes. The package runs through Friday morning, but you’re welcome to check out one day earlier — on the final workshop day, Thursday, August 12 — for 4 nights instead of 5 (and thereby subtract $312 for the last night). Check-out of your room is by 9 AM, before the morning workshop session. When inputting your dates to book, just change your check-out date to one day earlier.
Can my partner or a friend come along?
Absolutely — companions are welcome and very much part of the experience. The second guest in your room is booked as a companion, with lodging, all meals and gratuity included, for $114/night more than going solo. Many spouses and friends join just for the stay — exploring the forest, nearby towns, the pool, or a book by the tavern fire — while still sharing every meal.
Can my partner or friend also take the workshop?
If your companion also wants to paint, add “Additional Workshop Registration” at checkout, or contact us.
What about dietary needs?
Add any dietary requirements in the Special Requests field at checkout and we’ll prepare accordingly. All meals are shared together as a group.
How do I get there?
The nearest airports are Albany, Hartford, Boston, and Rutland VT. Train stations are in Albany NY and Brattleboro VT (recommend Albany if travelling from NYC). For transit from an airport or train station we recommend Mountain Drivers (802.772.5223, mtndrivers.com).
What should I bring?
The supply list is included will be provided ahead of the workshop and covers everything you’ll need to bring. Tables and studio space are provided.
