Diane Klock: “Keeping it Simple in Watercolor” 2027

Time & Location

May 11, 2027, 5:00 PM – May 16, 2027, 9:00 AM

The Landgrove Studio, 132 Landgrove Rd, Landgrove, VT 05148, USA

About the event

Some painters chase detail; Diane Klock chases feeling. A self-taught watercolorist who splits her time between New York City and the Connecticut hills, she paints her impression of the beautiful world — the energy of the city, the pops of color in a café window, the quiet of a shoreline or marina. Over four relaxed days in the Green Mountains, she’ll show you how to simplify what you see and let watercolor do what it does best.

Learn how to simplify watercolor during four days of immersion , just you and your paintbrush. We will learn fundamental art principles, do many  exercises and practices aimed at teaching you how to achieve simplicity and freshness in your work, while increasing your skill level.  We will break things down to simplify and then bring them all together and apply them to our painting. We will also be doing some sketching in ink and then adding a watercolor wash so you will come home with a memory of the area in sketching form as well .

What You’ll Explore

Diane teaches watercolor as a portable, joyful, see-it-and-simplify medium. All levels are welcome.

•      Seeing and simplifying a scene — what to keep, what to leave out

•      Loose, transparent washes and letting the white of the paper work

•      Color and light: capturing the “pops” that make a place feel alive

•      Sketching on location and from travel photos — cafés, shore, marinas, cityscapes

Meet Diane Klock

Diane Klock is a self-taught watercolorist who divides her time between New York City and Litchfield, Connecticut. She loves the transparency and feel of watercolor — and the fact that it travels well — painting her impression of the places she moves through: the energy of the city, cafés, landscapes, the shore, and the marinas she finds along the way.

Over fifteen years of painting she credits a series of generous teachers — among them Charles Sovek, Pat Weaver, and Eric Wiegardt — with shaping her loose, light-filled approach. Today she’s an accomplished teacher in her own right, leading watercolor and watercolor-sketching workshops at art centers around the country.

Mini-FAQ

Can I check out earlier?

Yes. The package runs through the morning after the final workshop day, but you’re welcome to check out one day earlier—on the final workshop day, and thereby subtract $312 for the last night. Check-out of your room is by 9 AM if doing so, before the morning workshop session. When inputting your dates to book, just change your check-out date to one day earlier.

Can my partner or a friend come along?

Absolutely — companions are welcome and very much part of the experience. The second guest in your room is booked as a companion, with lodging, all meals and gratuity included, for $114/night more than going solo. Many spouses and friends join just for the stay — exploring the forest, nearby towns, the pool, or a book by the tavern fire — while still sharing every meal.

Can my partner or friend also take the workshop?

If your companion also wants to paint, book an additional workshop registration with Diane, or contact us.

What about dietary needs?

Add any dietary requirements in the Special Requests field at checkout and we’ll prepare accordingly. All meals are shared together as a group.

How do I get there?

The nearest airports are Albany, Hartford, Boston, and Rutland VT. Train stations are in Albany NY and Brattleboro VT (recommend Albany if travelling from NYC). For transit from an airport or train station we recommend Mountain Drivers (802.772.5223, mtndrivers.com).

What should I bring?

The supply list is included will be provided ahead of the workshop and covers everything you’ll need to bring. Tables and studio space are provided.

Can Vermont locals attend without staying at the inn?

If you're a local and would want to commute to the workshop daily, we will take bookings for up to two workshop participants until 60 days before the workshop (within 60 days we open all available workshop spots for locals). The cost for local attendees is the workshop fee, plus one of the following meal plan options (including gratuity):
