About the event
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a fascinated spectator of human behavior — a quintessential people watcher. I naturally seek the unique character in everyone.”
This spring, Ted Nuttall shares his learnings on portraiture. Long enchanted by Cezanne, Morandi and Diebenkorn, Ted has set out to give everyday objects the very things he gives his portraits — light, emotion, color and composition — and to share exactly how he does it. Over four immersive days in the Green Mountains, you’ll learn to see past the ordinary and paint with feeling, whatever your level.
What You’ll Explore
Through daily demonstrations, lectures, and one-on-one guidance, Ted teaches not just technique but how an artist thinks as they approach a painting — lessons that carry across any subject or medium. All levels are welcome.
Seeing light, value and color in still-life subjects
Composition and the “why” behind a painting’s choices
Watercolor handling for expression, not just accuracy
Ted’s daily lectures — a uniquely edifying look at how painters think
Meet Ted Nuttall

Ted is a figurative watercolorist whose painting expression was born out of his observation of people — and whose daily lectures on art are, in students’ words, a uniquely edifying experience. Though best known for the figure, he’s long been drawn to the quiet power of the still life in the hands of painters like Cezanne, Morandi and Diebenkorn, and now brings that sensibility to the table for his students.
A graduate of the Colorado Institute of Art, Ted is a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS), National Watercolor Society (NWS), and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA), where he holds Master Signature status. His work has won awards in juried exhibitions nationwide, appeared in numerous national and international publications, and graced the cover of Watercolor Artist magazine.

Mini-FAQ
Can I check out earlier?
Yes. The package runs through the morning after the final workshop day, but you’re welcome to check out one day earlier—on the final workshop day, and thereby subtract $312 for the last night. Check-out of your room is by 9 AM if doing so, before the morning workshop session. When inputting your dates to book, just change your check-out date to one day earlier.
Can my partner or a friend come along?
Absolutely — companions are welcome and very much part of the experience. The second guest in your room is booked as a companion, with lodging, all meals and gratuity included, for $114/night more than going solo. Many spouses and friends join just for the stay — exploring the forest, nearby towns, the pool, or a book by the tavern fire — while still sharing every meal.
